DA’s 113rd anniversary highlights rice self-sufficiency, food security thrusts

The Department of Agriculture today observes its 113th anniversary, with the theme, ‘Pagkaing Sapat, Kalayaan sa Kagutuman ay Ganap.’
Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala says this year’s theme embodies the recent pronouncements of President Benigno S. Aquino III at the June 12, 2011 113th Philippine Independence Day celebrations, at Kawit, Cavite in the morning, and later in the afternoon, at the Quirino Grandstand, in Manila.

As part of his Independence Day speech at Quirino Grandstand, President Aquino said the most basic freedom envisioned by his late father, Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr, for all Filipinos is freedom from hunger.
Further, he hopes before his term ends in 2016 the country will no longer be a rice importer, but rather a rice exporter:

Same goes for a government institution’s programs and services.  That is why with a method that it has proven effective with time, the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) conducted a series of Technical Briefings and Technokliniks to create awareness about its programs as well as transfer information and technologies to farmers, extension workers and other agriculture stakeholders in the country.
