With its network of institutions and the services it offers, the e-Extension Program started to make waves in the international scene of ICT as it has been lined up as one of the topics shared during the 4th World Information Technology Forum (WITFOR) held last August 26-28, 2009 at the National Convention Center in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), the lead implementing agency for e-Extension and the extension and training arm of the Philippine Department of Agriculture, has been invited to share its experiences and learnings gained during the program implementation. Ms. Pamela Mappala, Assistant Chief of the ATI-Knowledge Products Management Division (ATI-KPMD) represented the Institute and delivered the paper entitled "ICT Initiatives of the Philippines Towards Sustainable Agricultural Development: The e-Extension Program for Agriculture and Fisheries", which was written by Ms. Mappala together with Ms. Antonieta J. Arceo, Chief of the ATI-KPMD and Mr. Joserey Y. Alo, e-Learning Process Advisor of ATI.

WITFOR 2009 was attended by more than 700 delegates from 120 countries, where about 100 international speakers had thorough discussions and exchanges on the various issues to help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals and to contribute to the implementation of the Action Plan of the World Summit on the Informationn Society. These issues include e-government, telecommunication infrastructure, human resources, open source software together with solutions and IT application lessons in socio-economic fields such as agriculture, healthcare, environment, education and commercial and business promotion.

With this year's theme "ICT for Sustainable Development", WITFOR 2009 was a minister-level event participated by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tang Dung as well as other high ranking officials from the global ICT community such as ICT ministers, senior policy-makers, international organizations, UN agency representatives aside from the non-government organizations, academe, ICT experts and the private sector.

WITFOR is organized every two years by the International Federation for Information Processing since 2003 by establishing linkages among the developed and developing countries to be able to exploit the developmental opportunities through ICT. (Pamela Mappala)
