"Ang dami kong natutunan dito sir!!!"

“Ang dami kong natutunan dito Sir”, exclaimed by Mr. Macario Alcaide during post OJT meeting with the school official and ATI Staff. He is one of the five OJTs at ATI-RTC IV-B and was selected by MinSCAT as the best OJT for the school year 2007-2008.

Being satisfied with our OJT program, all graduating students have always recommended our agency to be one of the OJT destinations for the next batches of graduating students. For the record, the ATI- RTC IV-B have already trained five batches in a row of OJTs with 19 graduating Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Crop Science students.

Mr. Norberto C. Maur – an Agriculturist II was assigned to supervise OJTs, prepare and implement training plan, give lecturette and coaching for the preparation of Action Plans, Accomplishment Reports, Project Feasibility  study, Training Design Preparation, Organic Vegetable Gardening and leading them in acquiring some farming skills. On the other hand, Mr. Ruben P. Jugno, Mrs. Lorna M. Palomera and Ms. Mina Lanto have contributed to prepare these students physically and psychologically by providing them with lectures, workshops and tips on Extension Delivery System.

In November 5, 2007, five (5) graduating BSA Crop Science students were accepted by ATI RTC IV-B for sixty-day apprenticeship. The students were: Macario Alcaide, Joseph Hipona, Cesario Tolentino, Melody Sena and Ma. Madelyn Regalado.

They are treated as farm managers. Four major perceived competencies of an effective Agricultural Extension Workers were gradually imparted to them:

1. Preparation of Project Proposals
OJTs were required to prepare each a Project Feasibility Study and a Training Design. Doing a Project Feasibility Study course is given to them in modules.   Sessions were done every Mondays to discuss each steps and at the same time to review what they have prepared. They have given a chance to select the commodity or economic activities for the said study. Steps in the Preparation of a Training Design were discussed to them with format to follow.

2. Presentation and facilitation skills
During Monday sessions OJTs were required to report the status of their vegetable garden. In the process, they have gradually learned the science and art of reporting. In addition to this, self-confidence was gradually developed among them.

On January 11, 2008, training on Facilitation Skills was given to them in preparation to their speakership to the forthcoming training on Palayamanan.   Each OJT were given with a commodity to discuss before the farmer-participants. In general, they have delivered their piece successfully.

3. Technology Demonstration and Data Analysis
Each students were given a portion of land (approximately 120 square meters each) to develop. They were allowed to prepare and implement a farm plan based on organic approach.

Students were challenge to apply what they have learned during their three and a half years of academic studies, but were guided accordingly in every phases of farm activities.

Weekly, each student have to collect agronomic and ecological data based on the pre-identified ten sample plants. Data were analyzed and findings were shared with the group during the first working day of each week.

Necessary labor for garden development, maintenance and marketing is a responsibility of the OJT while ATI provides other necessary materials and supplies. A 75:25 sharing scheme on sales is enforced for every student. ATI share of 25% of the gross sales is used as revolving fund for the next batch of OJT. The highest student share so far is about 1,200.00 pesos for pole sitao.

In the process students were able to experience and acquired knowledge and skills in specific vegetable production and marketing.

4.   Report Writing
A bimonthly “Action Plan and Accomplishment Report were required for each OJTs. These were enabled them to practice their planning and report writing skills.   Individual as well as group coaching on how to prepare an action plan and accomplishment reports were done accordingly.   Strengths and weaknesses of their reporting styles were discussed individually.

OJTs were given with time cards and instructed to punch in everyday before 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM and punch out after 12:00 Noon and 5:00 PM.   This enabled them to experience part of a regular employee’s responsibility.

On-the-job trainees were permitted to attend Livestock Production Training and Organic Corn Production as participants and at the same time as part of the training management team. This gave them an experience on how the training is being implemented and managed.
